The museum is in the open country, on the main road San Vitale. It houses a permanent exhibition of contemporary pieces of forniture from all countries, spanning from 1880 to the end of the XX century; the museum also hosts temporary art and design exhibitions and cultural and music events.

The museum can be considered as a wide art gallery where every single piece of furniture have been chosen according to its shape, material and technique in order to recall a particular historical period. Temporary exhibitions are normally organized in the upper floor;in the past here have been held exhibitions dedicated to Frank L. Wright, Ignazio Gardella, Umberto Bellotto, Corbusier, to women's design and many other artists, architects and designers.
There's also a more recent gallery which is linked to main building by the famous architect Ettore Sottsass.
