PIEVE DI SANTO STEFANO IN TEGURIO

PIEVE DI SANTO STEFANO IN TEGURIO

The parish church dates back to the VIII century and is located in the countryside. Starting from the XVIII century the building underwent several alterations, and finally it was heavily damaged during the World War II.

The first document attesting its existence is dated 963 B.C. The name "S. Stefano in Tegurio" probably refers to the old course of Tegurio river, that in the past flew near the church. Traces of the original plan still remain, especially in the central nave with rostred pillars and stone columns surmounted by ancient capitals.

The main front, which is decorated by pilasters alternated with six small windows, is the original one. Among the ancient sculptures which used to be in the church, we can mention a marble fragment used as basament of a cross in the presbitery. The fragment was part of a Bizantine capital.
