TEATRO COMUNALE CARLO GOLDONI - MUNICIPAL THEATRE

Bagnacavallo had a theatre also in the early XVIII century. It was a wooden structure inside the present Palazzo Abbondanza. In 1839, the Municipality decided to built a new theatre hall overlooking the main square, right next to the city hall, on the area formerly occupied by Palazzo Brandolini. The theatre was built between 1839 and 1845 on the design of the Bolognese architect Filippo Antolini (1786 - 1859), and then it was inaugurated in 1845. In 1907 the theatre was named after the famous playwright Carlo Goldoni. His father lived for a while in Bagnacavallo, where he worked as a doctor.
The brick facade of the building has an arcade with five round arches; the interior has the traditional italian theatre structure and is decorated with frescos and stuccos. At the sides of proscenium there are six medallions in gilt wood depicting illustrious people born in Bagnacavallo or in some way connectected to the town. The original curtain, painted by Antonio Muzzi (1815 - 1894) depicts "Senator Camillo Gozzadini's visit to Bartolomeo Ramenghi".
The theatre can host about four hundred people, in the stalls, in the three tiers of boxes and in the upper gallery.
Since the beginning of the XX century it used to be a famous venue for opera; in more recent times, the "Goldoni" theatre has become an important reference point for contemporary theatre, for Italian plays, for comic theatre and contemporary music concerts, since it often hosts national previews of the most important Italian actors and companies.
