BARBIANO

BARBIANO

Little village of Cotignola municipality has roman origins. Barbiano is the homeland of Alberico da Barbiano who's considered to be one of the most important italian mercenary captain.

The name comes from the "gens Balbia", a very renowned family in the history of ancient Rome. The division of the fields and streets, lay out clearly, preserve the structure of roman centuries. Around 826, it was donated, together with the two castles of Cunio and Lugo, to Everardo, son of Desiderio, king of the Longobards. Thirty four years later, an imposant castle was built, destroyed then in 1409. In the first centuries after year 1000, Barbiano was an important centre mainly because of the presence of an ancient Parish Church that represented a pole of attraction for the surrounding villages. In 1450, the Duke Borso d'Este donated the village to Cotignola and since then its history is joined to the one of this town.

Barbiano is the homeland of Alberico da Barbiano who's considered to be one of the most important italian mercenary captain, due to his exceptional bravery shown along battles and for innovations in fighting technique.

Every year, during the last Sunday of May, the traditional "Palio di Alberico" celebrates him.
