Lago dei Gelsi, or Lago della Fornace, is an artificial lake that formed from a quarry now closed and used to extract clay.

This pool of water is fed by an aquifer and surrounded by white willow trees and black poplars. It extends over 4 hectares.
The lake is home of several species such as European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis), northern pike (Esox lucius) and tench (Tinca tinca).
You can also enjoy watching several species of migratory fowl, mainly Anatidae, depending on the season; for instance, mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) and Eurasian widgeons (Anas penelope). Other wading birds often seen here are grey herons (Ardea cinerea), little egrets (Egretta garzetta), Eurasian coots (Fulica atra), and Common moorhens (Gallinula chloropus).

Lago dei Gelsi is run by the ‘Primola’ Association of Cotignola and can be visited the whole year round although prior booking is required. Access to the area is restricted to protect the environment.
